the newcastle , north shields railway opened in 1839. in 1847, railway extended tynemouth when railway station built in oxford street, off tynemouth road. eventually, replaced new station further away river after new rail lines developed. riverside tracks removed creation of hadrian s way, part of national cycle network, remained tracks absorbed in tyne , wear metro system in 1982. town centre station, constructed newcastle , north shields railway, redeveloped between 1980 , 1982 metro. subsequently refurbished in 2012. tyne , wear metro links north shields newcastle city centre, , other destinations in tyne , wear including whitley bay, newcastle airport , sunderland. town served stations in percy main , meadow well.
the tyneside tramways , tramroads company operated electric tramway service in town.
local ferry
a half-hourly ferry service connects north shields town of south shields on opposite bank of tyne.
from june october river trips ferry operate.
international ferry
from international ferry terminal, based @ royal quays, danish company dfds seaways operates daily service ijmuiden.
the ferry service gothenburg, sweden (run dfds seaways), ceased operation @ end of october 2006. dfds seaways sister company, dfds tor line, continues run scheduled freight ships between gothenburg , several english ports, including newcastle, these have limited capacity passengers , not carry private vehicles.
