the next generation of toranas (lc) appeared in october 1969 , available either four- or six-cylinder engine. inline 6 had capacity of 138 cu in (badged 2250 ); more-powerful 161 cu in engine (badged 2600 ) optional. six-cylinder cars had longer wheelbase (100 in against 95.8 inches (2,430 mm) of four-cylinder models), more aggressively styled, longer nose accommodate larger engine, , offered choice of three- or four-speed manual gearbox or three-speed trimatic automatic transmission. torana wheels magazine s car of year 1969.


the four-cylinder engine of 1159 cc, , offered either 56 or 69 hp (42 or 51 kw). more powerful brabham model discontinued. in july 1971, bigger overhead cam 1.6-litre engine 80 hp (60 kw) added; engine sourced vauxhall in uk. 1600 received strengthened gearbox, well.


body styles new , available in either two- or four-door versions, , offered in base (four-cylinder only), s, or sl trims. two-door sports model, gtr, had 2600s motor two-barrel stromberg ww carburettor , front discs standard. front discs brakes option other models. bucket front seats standard lcs, front bench seat optional four-door s , sl six-cylinder models. later in production (july 1971), 161-ci engine replaced larger 173-ci version (badged 2850 ) made last of lc gtr cars in two-barrel form (2850s).


in august 1970, first genuine performance torana, gtr xu-1, developed holden along harry firth of holden dealer team competition in popular series production racing series in australia, in off-road rallying. however, main purpose of torana gtr xu-1 keep holden competitive against big , powerful ford falcon gt-ho v8s in hardie-ferodo 500 (bathurst) endurance race consider jewel in crown of australian motorsport.


the lc torana gtr xu-1 equipped 160-brake horsepower 186-cu in (3-litre) six-cylinder engine, fitted 3 zenith-stromberg cd-150 carburettors, cast-iron headers, performance cylinder head , camshaft, , opel four-speed manual gearbox. car featured rear spoiler, guard flutes, wider steel rims, full instrumentation, , front disc brakes standard. torana gtr xu-1 proved strong performer on both road , track due favourable power/weight ratio. gained popularity in australia, being ideal race car in many forms of motor sport, series production touring car racing , rallying. replaced v8 monaro gts 350 holden s frontline track race car in 1970, winning many touring car , rally events, famed bathurst 500-mile (800 km) race ford won in 1970 , 1971 xw phase 2 , xy phase 3 falcon gt-hos, respectively.

in february 1972, facelifted lj torana introduced six-cylinder models visually associated larger holden hq series. many mechanical components shared lc, major changes limited choice of engines. four-cylinder torana retained 1200 , 1600 engines, available 1300-cc unit. old 1200 available two-door standard version, while 1300 equipped deluxe model , available 4 doors , automatic transmission. 2250 , 2850 engines carried on revised six-cylinder torana models, , 3300 engine (known 202 in hq range) adopted engine lj torana gtr sedan. gearbox choices remained same across range.


a race-bred version of 3300 engine fitted lj torana gtr xu-1, producing on 200 bhp (149 kw; 203 ps). equipping xu-1 202-ci engine , larger cd-175 zenith-stromberg triple carburettors, new close-ratio m20 four-speed australian-made transmission (commonly known aussie 4-speed , incorrectly called m21), gave nimble xu-1 power boost needed challenge powerful ford falcon gtho phase iii, had won 1971 hardie-ferodo 500 production-car endurance race held annually @ bathurst.


in wet 1972 hardie-ferodo 500, lightweight hdt torana gtr xu-1 able claim victory against heavyweight gt-ho, driven solo 500 miles (800 km) peter brock. start of peter perfect /torana legend, , first of 5 bathurst wins torana in colourful 10-year racing career @ bathurst.


the holden dealer team developed 300 bhp (224 kw; 304 ps), 308ci v8-powered version of gtr xu-1, erroneously referred gtr xu-2. v8 torana did race in sports sedan racing in hands of brock , colin bond, , extensively road tested hdt boss harry firth , young team engineer/driver larry perkins, car never made past prototype stage. due supercar scare of 1972, involved vast political pressure being placed upon holden, ford, , chrysler abandon proposed specially built bathurst supercars , such v8 gtr xu-1. result of media frenzy reporting against these soon-to-be released bullets on wheels available general public. in effect, 3 manufacturers (holden, ford , chrysler) bowed pressure, , holden postponed introduction of v8 torana 2 years until release of larger lh series torana in 1974.


a total of 81,813 lj toranas built holden in australia, exported new zealand, in six-cylinder form, due similar four-cylinder vauxhall viva hc range being sold there, well. 2850sl model, bucket seats , four-speed floor shift or trimatic three-speed automatic, shipped new zealand in ckd kit form local assembly 1973, becoming first kiwi-built torana.


south korea

the lj torana formed basis of chevrolet 1700 in south korea, produced gm korea between september 1972 , 1976. unlike torana, 1700 available five-door station wagon. powered 1698-cc four-cylinder engine, 1700 sold poorly in korean market 8105 units produced; car perceived suffer high fuel consumption. suspension seen unsuitable korean roads.


due poor chevrolet 1700 sales, car revised camina in 1976 (general motors korea sold saehan motors in 1976 after management troubles). however, chevrolet version continued sell alongside until both models discontinued in 1978. smaller 1492-cc engine fitted deliver better fuel economy hyundai , kia competitors, sales did not recover 992 cars sold in 2 years. 1.5-liter engine offered 66 ps (49 kw), enough top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) sedan. station wagon, retained 1700 engine, called saehan caravan (새한 캬라반); 966 of these sold january 1976 until march 1979. ambulance version arrived in april 1976. 1700 , camina replacement, 1977 saehan gemini, development of isuzu gemini (sold in australia holden gemini).

in 1974, six-cylinder lj torana replaced new mid-sized body six- , eight-cylinder lh torana series. fill in time before march 1975 release of four-cylinder gm world t-car holden gemini, short-wheelbase four-cylinder (1.3- , 1.8-litre) lj models given basic facelift incorporating body-colour plastic-moulded front grille assembly , revamped rear light lenses. car released in february 1974 on australian market only, in both two- , four-door forms, ta torana. produced 11 months total production run of 11,304 units.
