the town of bolton incorporated on june 24, 1738, following influx of settlers. town historian esther whitcomb, descendant of 1 of bolton s earliest documented settlers, cites recorded birth of son, hezekiah, josiah whitcomb in 1681. 1711, according whitcomb, more 150 people living on bolton soil, despite local history of indian uprisings , 1 massacre. many houses protected flankers, , designated garrisons. bolton s history interesting because reflective of settlement patterns in central massachusetts area, , conflicts king philip (metacom) , indian soldiers. town formerly part of town of lancaster, seceded along still river, current boundary line still stands.


in 1920s bolton used setting , mentioned number of times in h.p. lovecraft s fiction: setting in “herbert west — reanimator”, , mentioned in “the rats in walls” , “the colour out of space”.
