after retiring supreme court, vaithalingam appointed chairman of commercial bank of ceylon , appointed first chancellor of university of jaffna.


in retirement, member of both citizen committee , delimitation committee among many others. devote hindu, served president of educational society many years.

vaithalingam appointed first chancellor of university of jaffna president of sri lanka effect first of january, 1979. in course of tenure, lasted half decade, presided on first convocation held @ veerasingam hall on 13th of september 1980 , delivered first convocation address. conferred doctorate university.

vaithalingam awarded deshamanya award within 2 years of founding in 1987. first sri lankan tamil receive award , appearance of common ground between government , prominent tamil caused adverse reaction liberation tigers of tamil eelam. ltte called on him refuse reward, if valued life; however, vaithalingam defied outfit , accepted honour.
