approximately 90,000 years ago @ time of okinajima pyroclastic flow, , 50,000 years ago @ time of zunashi pyroclastic flow, river formally flowing through inawashiro basin dammed, water level went up, , lake inawashiro appeared.


although said eruption created 4 peaks in 1888 (mt. obandai, mt. kobandai, mt. akabane, , mt. amidagamine) mt. fuji shaped mountain of on 2000 meters formed in eruption in 806 (the first year of daido), there historic evidence shows there eruptions @ earlier times, changed mt. fuji shaped mountain.

on july 15, 1888 there explosion of water vapour in kobandai eruption. believed hot ground water continuously spurting out had weathered mountain , caused collapse. caused avalanche of debris bury 5 nearby villages on north foot of mountain , 477 people killed.


this eruption first major disaster modern japanese government began meiji period.


the government launched enquiry investigate eruption , implemented kiyokage sekiya , yasu kikuchi. government provided relief , attempted rebuild affected villages. extensive research, including surveys undertaken causes of eruption , extent of damage – unusual measure take @ time. detailed pictures taken of events.


donations amounting ¥38,000 gathered (which equates around ¥1.5bn presently) , these supported relief , restoration effort. japanese red cross organization involved in relief effort after having been formed previous year (1887) following eruption , first peacetime involvement in relief. monument erected in goshikinuma honour helped relief effort.



the events of eruption


in week before eruption there rumbling not recognized warning eruption. earthquake began @ around 7am on day of eruption , eruption began @ around 7:45. there 20 explosions following this. after explosive eruption, north side of kobandai collapsed , sector collapses begun. river nagasegawa , tributaries blocked , lahars (volcanic mudslides) , debris flows damaged downstream section of river. lake hibara, onogawako, akimotoko , goshikinuma formed, lakes of varied sizes. @ time landscape of urabandai formed.
