watson’s will, dated 12 august 1803, stated: give , bequeath picture painted mr. copley represents accident lost leg in harbour of havannah in year 1 thousand 7 hundred , forty 9 governors of christ s hospital delivered them after decease of wife helen watson or before if shall think proper hoping said worthy governors receive same testimony of high estimation in hold excellent charity , allow hung in hall of hospital holding out usefull [sic] lesson youth. school s committee of almoners accepted painting in 1819. in 1963 purchased christ’s hospital national gallery of art, washington, d.c.
