on march 16, 2007 pet food manufacturer menu foods announced recall of dog food sold under 53 brands, , cat food sold under 42 brands, after unknown number of animals suffered kidney failure after eating it. on april 3 united states food , drug administration (fda) distributed recall notice issued chemnutra potentially-contaminated wheat gluten had been imported fda alleges 1 of 3 chinese suppliers, xuzhou anying biologic technology development. mao lijun, general manager of xuzhou anying biologic, denies directly supplying chemnutra wheat gluten, claiming have never exported u.s. since trading company.

on february 6, 2008, federal grand jury in kansas city, missouri returned 27 count criminal indictment against owners of chemnutra , in case headed fda office of criminal investigations investigating xac , ssc.

as of april 6, @ least 471 cases of poisoning have been reported , 104 animals have died. fda reports have received on 12,000 complaints related poisoning.

on april 5, company recalled 782 tones of wheat gluten had imported xuzhou anying biologic technology development.

the fda served search warrant on company on april 27.

by may 18, company had hired 2 companies deal public relations fall out contamination.
