for outstanding heroism , courage above , beyond call of duty executive officer of marine fighting squadron, @ guadalcanal, solomon islands. engaging in daily combat enemy october 9 november 19, 1942, captain foss shot down 23 japanese aircraft , damaged others severely destruction extremely probable. in addition, during period, led large number of escort missions, skillfully covering reconnaissance, bombing , photographic planes surface craft. on january 15, 1943, added 3 more enemy aircraft brilliant successes record of aerial combat achievement unsurpassed in war. boldly searching out approaching enemy force on january 25, captain foss led 8 f4f marine planes , 4 army p-38s action and, undaunted tremendously superior numbers, intercepted , struck such force 4 japanese fighters shot down , bombers turned without releasing single bomb. remarkable flying skill, inspiring leadership , indomitable fighting spirit distinctive factors in defense of strategic american positions on guadalcanal.
