the monument consists of bronze statue on stone base. overall height 29 feet (8.8 m), , circumference of base 95 feet 4 inches (29.1 m). base consists of drum-shaped pedestal in westmorland marble 8 feet 10 inches (2.7 m) high, standing on granite basement 6 feet (1.8 m) high. seated around pedestal 4 statues depicting manacled prisoners sitting in poses of sadness; represent nelson s major victories, battles of cape st vincent, nile, copenhagen, , trafalgar. set drum between statues 4 bronze bas-reliefs depicting other naval actions in nelson involved. encircling pedestal above statues swags of laurel hanging behind lions heads. attached rings in lions mouths chains descend manacle prisoners. @ top of pedestal cornice inscription in metal letters reading england expects every man duty .
on top of pedestal bronze group of figures 14 feet 2 inches (4.3 m) high, each figure being 7 feet (2.1 m) in height, , forming pyramidal structure. there 5 figures surrounded drapes , poles of captured flags, anchor , rope on ground. idealised nude representation of nelson stands 1 foot on cannon , other on enemy s corpse, holding upright sword on victory placing last of 4 crowns. right of nelson figure of death reaching out touch him. on left of nelson british seaman striding forward. behind nelson figure of britannia holding laurel wreath , nelson s decorations.
