france did not abandon claims texas until november 3, 1762, when ceded of territory west of mississippi river spain in treaty of fontainebleau, following defeat great britain in 7 years war. ceded new france britain. in 1803, 3 years after spain had returned louisiana france, napoleon sold territory united states. original agreement between spain , france had not explicitly specified borders of louisiana, , descriptions in documents ambiguous , contradictory. united states insisted purchase included of territory france had claimed, including of texas. dispute not resolved until adams-onĂ­s treaty of 1819, in spain ceded florida united states in return united states relinquishing claim on texas.
