the parmalat scandal

in january 2004, italian dairy giant parmalat caught in multibillion-euro accounting scandal, culminating in arrest of owner calisto tanzi. parmalat cfo fausto tonna told italian business daily il sole 24 ore tetra pak had made substantial payments tanzi , family , company in cayman islands belonging parmalat. tetra pak acknowledged having made payments parmalat stated payments had been made discounts subsidize marketing operations , pricing, usual practice large customers. tetra pak asked italian authorities provide documentation on transactions, , found payments had been made since 1995 part of regular operations no payments had been made tanzi family. calisto tanzi sentenced 8 years imprisonment fraud italian high court in milan after several appeals in lower instances.
