on february 15, 2006, toronto—danforth ndp riding association nominated tabuns party s candidate in provincial by-election, fill vacancy caused resignation of former ndp member of provincial parliament marilyn churley. churley resigned provincial seat in order run in 2006 federal election ndp candidate beaches-east york.


tabuns opponents in election former broadcaster , liberal candidate ben chin, progressive conservative candidate georgina blanas , green party candidate paul charbonneau. on march 30, 2006, tabuns won by-election 47.8% support voters.


upon being sworn in mpp, ndp leader howard hampton reorganized shadow cabinet , gave rookie member long list of portfolios, including transportation, environment, public infrastructure renewal, greater toronto area, culture, tourism , recreation, citizenship , immigration, , multicultural affairs.


in october 2006, tabuns voted best mpp magazine readers, positions on climate change, portlands energy centre, , childhood learning centres in constituency. tabuns has been known stance on same-sex parental rights, anti-toxics legislation , recognition of foreign credentials. in same month, tabuns recognized tabling motion recognize june 22, 2006 chinese canadian head tax redress day.


tabuns re-elected in 2007, 2011, , in 2014 provincial elections.

following resignation of party leader howard hampton in june 2008, peter tabuns mentioned in press candidate in emerging campaign leadership. on october 27, 2008, tabuns officially launched campaign leadership. party s leadership convention held in march 2009. tabuns lost andrea horwath margin of 60% 40% on third ballot following defeat of contenders michael prue , gilles bisson in earlier rounds.
