the next generation of toranas (lc) appeared in october 1969 , available either four- or six-cylinder engine. inline 6 had capacity of 138 cu in (badged 2250 ); more-powerful 161 cu in engine (badged 2600 ) optional. six-cylinder cars had longer wheelbase (100 in against 95.8 inches (2,430 mm) of four-cylinder models), more aggressively styled, longer nose accommodate larger engine, , offered choice of three- or four-speed manual gearbox or three-speed trimatic automatic transmission. torana wheels magazine s car of year 1969.


the four-cylinder engine of 1159 cc, , offered either 56 or 69 hp (42 or 51 kw). more powerful brabham model discontinued. in july 1971, bigger overhead cam 1.6-litre engine 80 hp (60 kw) added; engine sourced vauxhall in uk. 1600 received strengthened gearbox, well.


body styles new , available in either two- or four-door versions, , offered in base (four-cylinder only), s, or sl trims. two-door sports model, gtr, had 2600s motor two-barrel stromberg ww carburettor , front discs standard. front discs brakes option other models. bucket front seats standard lcs, front bench seat optional four-door s , sl six-cylinder models. later in production (july 1971), 161-ci engine replaced larger 173-ci version (badged 2850 ) made last of lc gtr cars in two-barrel form (2850s).


in august 1970, first genuine performance torana, gtr xu-1, developed holden along harry firth of holden dealer team competition in popular series production racing series in australia, in off-road rallying. however, main purpose of torana gtr xu-1 keep holden competitive against big , powerful ford falcon gt-ho v8s in hardie-ferodo 500 (bathurst) endurance race consider jewel in crown of australian motorsport.


the lc torana gtr xu-1 equipped 160-brake horsepower 186-cu in (3-litre) six-cylinder engine, fitted 3 zenith-stromberg cd-150 carburettors, cast-iron headers, performance cylinder head , camshaft, , opel four-speed manual gearbox. car featured rear spoiler, guard flutes, wider steel rims, full instrumentation, , front disc brakes standard. torana gtr xu-1 proved strong performer on both road , track due favourable power/weight ratio. gained popularity in australia, being ideal race car in many forms of motor sport, series production touring car racing , rallying. replaced v8 monaro gts 350 holden s frontline track race car in 1970, winning many touring car , rally events, famed bathurst 500-mile (800 km) race ford won in 1970 , 1971 xw phase 2 , xy phase 3 falcon gt-hos, respectively.
