under french indochina
construction of palace began in 1885 , completed in 1890, , designed french architect alfred foulhoux house museum of commercial trade, exhibiting products , goods of southern vietnam. however, building became residence of governor of cochinchina, starting henri Éloi danel (1850 - 1898).
world war ii era
in 1945, control of palace changed hands several times. after japanese imperial army toppled colonial regime of french indochina on march 9, french governor ernest thimothée hoeffel arrested, , palace became residence japanese governor yoshio minoda.
on august 14, japanese handed on palace puppet empire of vietnam government, used residence of lieutenant general nguyễn văn sâm.
on august 25, việt minh seized, arresting nguyễn văn sâm , secretary of office of lieutenant general hồ văn ngà. after, building became headquarters of provisional administrative committee of southern vietnam, later renamed people s committee of southern vietnam .
on september 10, lt. col. b. w. roe (from british military mission) occupied palace , made allied mission headquarters, evicting people s committee .
on october 5, building used general leclerc temporary headquarters of high commission french republic in indochina. after admiral georges thierry d argenlieu high commission selected norodom palace commission s new location, palace used leclerc s office, time official headquarters of commissioner of french republic in southern vietnam.
under state of vietnam
after french reconquest of indochina, on june 2, 1948 french government handed on building provisional government of state of vietnam, establishing headquarters there. later transformed palace of premier, serving official residence of premier of state of vietnam, starting premier trần văn hữu.
on january 9, 1950, large protest of on 6000 students , educational instructors demanded release of students arrested advocating vietnamese independence. @ 13:00, premier trần văn hữu ordered police quash protest, arresting 150 people, injuring 30, , 1 student, trần văn Ơn petrus ký high school, died injuries. trần văn Ơn s funeral on january 12, 1950, had 25,000 attendees.
under republic of vietnam
from june 26 september 7, 1954, palace used temporary official residence of prime minister (ngô Đình diệm), since norodom palace still occupied french high commissioner gen. paul ely. bảo Đại renamed palace gia long palace, , street renamed gia long street (from la grandìere). last residence of president of republic of vietnam ngô Đình diệm, beginning 27 february 1962 after norodom palace bombed , partially destroyed mutinous air force pilots. diệm had been prime minister since 1954, , president since 1955, lived in independence palace until bombed 2 mutinous pilots of republic of vietnam air force. result, diệm had relocate, , ordered new palace built, moving gia long palace in interim. last place diệm worked before assassination on 2 november 1963 in coup d etat.

under communist vietnam
after north vietnamese communist invasion of south vietnam, on 12 august 1978 ho chi minh city people s committee ordered former supreme court used ho chi minh city revolutionary museum (bảo tàng cách mạng thành phố hồ chí minh), propaganda museum, later renamed current name on 13 december 1999.
