the area known city of hervey bay first received local government divisional boards act 1879, on 11 november 1879, antigua (population 1636) , burrum (population 1511) divisions created.


a later division, howard, split away division of isis in 1900.


with passage of local authorities act 1902, antigua, burrum , howard divisions became shires of antigua, burrum , howard on 31 march 1903.


on 3 june 1905, shire of degilbo, later renamed biggenden, split away shire of burrum.


on 23 december 1905, shire of burrum renamed shire of pialba.

on 17 february 1917, there reorganisation of local government in maryborough area. 5 shires abolished:



antigua
granville
howard
pialba
tinana

the resulting local government areas were:



a recreated shire of burrum, comprising of shires of howard , pialba , part of shire of antigua , part of city of maryborough
an altered shire of kilkivan, losing parts shire of tiaro , shire of tinana gaining part of shire of tiaro , part of shire of woocoo
an altered city of maryborough, losing small part shire of burrum gaining part of shire of granville
an altered shire of tiaro, losing part shire of kilkivan, gaining parts of shires of granville, kilkivan , widgee
an altered shire of tinana, gaining parts of shires of granville, kilkivan , widgee
an altered shire of widgee, losing part shire of kilkivan, gaining part of shire of tiaro
an enlarged shire of woocoo, losing part shire of kilkivan, gaining parts of shires of antigua , howard

a coastal focus in 1970s

by 1920s hervey bay area rapidly expanding due continuing growth in primary industries such sugar cane, citrus, pineapples, beef cattle , fishing, investment in transport infrastructure. in 1950s , 1960s, population , development increased, , coastal settlements merged single urban area.


on 20 december 1975, shire of burrum renamed shire of hervey bay effect local government elections of 27 march 1976. new focus on coastal region, 1,086.4 km (419.5 sq mi) of area, estimated population of 1,119, annexed city of maryborough, while 1,269.0 km (490.0 sq mi) estimated population of 2,629 annexed shire of woocoo.


in september 1977, shire of hervey bay became town of hervey bay, , on 18 february 1984 became city.


amalgamations of 2008

on 15 march 2008, under local government (reform implementation) act 2007 passed parliament of queensland on 10 august 2007, hervey bay merged city of maryborough, shire of woocoo , part of tiaro form fraser coast region.
