career

after graduating college, moved taiwan in 2001 obtained job working director edward yang, describes “is kind of family friend”. experience working in taiwan cinema reaffirmed interest in film-making. after, enrolled in film school between 2003 , 2006 @ university of southern california, made first short film mei. won 2007 silver bear in berlin’s international short film competition.

chen went on work on first feature-length film, au revoir taipei, both directed , wrote. although wasn t fluent in mandarin, friends had helped him translation script. script writing process 1 of challenges experienced in field. au revoir taipei won best asian film award network promotion of asian cinema (netpac) @ 2010 berlin international film festival. film won jury prize best film @ 2010 deauville asian film festival, , audience award best narrative feature film @ 2010 san francisco international asian american film festival. film nominated independent spirit award (producers award producer in-ah lee) , lino brocka award in international competition of 2010 cinemanila international film festival.
