karl g. maeser born on january 16, 1828, in town of meissen, in saxony, germany, johann gottfried , federicka zocher maeser. maeser oldest of 4 sons. family known in meissen. father china painter in porcelain shop. maeser went public school in meissen. temporarily lost sight 8 months when 11 years old due unknown cause.


in 1842, maeser enrolled in kreuzschule in dresden; attended 2 years, , graduating kreuzschule have propelled him german upper class. however, maeser chose study @ friedrichstadt schullehrerseminar in dresden, school train prospective teachers. graduated on may 20, 1848. maeser became schoolteacher , tutored protestant children in bohemia 3 years. returned dresden , teacher @ first district school in dresden. later taught @ budich institute, made headmaster.


in december 1848, maeser required enlist in military two-year assignment; however, declared unfit. maeser had no major physical or mental disabilities have impacted conscription. on june 11, 1854, maeser married anna mieth, daughter of director of first district school in dresden. couple had first child, reinhard, in 1855. had 8 children together.
