in 1917, archdiocese of philadelphia purchased 33 acres (130,000 m) $57,000 , ordinary, archbishop edmond francis prendergast, announced construction of orphanage 5 hundred orphans operated sisters of charity of blessed virgin mary. orphanage replaced 1 demolished allow construction of benjamin franklin parkway. named st. vincent s orphanage. paul monaghan employed architect , commissioned build 1 of finest buildings in diocese. work on project slowed war, , archbishop prendergast died before work completed.


on may 9, 1920 dedication took place. 40,000 people, accompanied bands , musicians, walked 69th street dedication. 20,000 walked pennsylvania railroad station in lansdowne, , 65,000 more arrived motorcar or trolley 69th street. archbishop dennis dougherty , governor sproul spoke 125,000 well-wishers gathered on front lawn , along garrett road.

on january 6, 2012, archdiocese announced both archbishop prendergast high school , monsignor bonner high school close in june 2012, along 3 other philadelphia catholic high schools , 44 catholic elementary schools.


on friday, february 24, 2012, archdiocese of philadelphia announced archbishop prendergast high school , monsignor bonner high school remain open merged co-educational high school due immense support alumni , surrounding community.
