expansion of business post-war largely initiated fourth generation family members: bancroft clark, appointed managing director , chairman in 1942 , cousins, anthony clark , peter clothier, accountable sales/marketing , manufacturing respectively.


the start-up or acquisition of additional manufacturing facilities (peaking @ 17 domestic factories) across south west , south east of england , south wales meant company’s volume market share in uk increased 1.1 percent in 1945 9 per cent 1970.


foreign manufacturing sought through agreements existing domestic manufacturers: ireland in 1930s australia, canada , south africa added in 1940s , 1950s. nathan clark (younger brother of bancroft) negotiated number of these agreements in capacity overseas manager until 1952.


bancroft retired in 1967. son, daniel clark succeeded peter clothier managing director in 1973, anthony clark remaining chairman. retired in 1974, when son, lance clark appointed managing director of manufacturing , wholesaling division.


in 1974 clarks bought fashionable ravel, pinet , mondaine. company acquired k shoes, based in kendal, cumbria salvage hostile takeover. closure of factories started in 1978, , continued throughout 1980s.


daniel clark resigned in 1986 replaced john clothier (son of peter) remained ceo throughout turbulent buy-out negotiations berisford international plc, properties commodities group attempted take troubled company public. while proposal defeated shareholders @ egm convened on may 7, 1993 decided move away direct family management professional managers, rationalise business, , more comfortable making changes needed recovery.
