origins of c. & j. clark can traced 1821 when cyrus clark (1801-1866) entered partnership quaker cousin in trade of fellmongering, woolstapling , tanning in street, somerset. 1825, partnership had been dissolved , cyrus relocated site on high street in street, utilising premises belonged father-in-law exploit idea of making rugs out of sheepskins instead of pulling off wool. c. & j. clark recognise beginning of business , continue occupy site upon cyrus started day.
by 1828, business had grown, cyrus appointed younger brother james (1811-1906) apprentice. educated away street, james meant apprentice chemist in bath, pleaded parents let him stay in street , cyrus. in 1828-1829, whilst serving apprenticeship, james began utilising offcuts short making rugs produce slippers (known brown petersburgs). slippers made using outworkers collected materials factory, assembled footwear in workshops @ home , returned finished product payment. trade rapidly evolved, providing james legitimate claim equal partnership in business when apprenticeship served in 1833. thereafter, traded c. & j. clark.
the brothers developed national , international trade (ireland in 1820s, canada 1830s, australia in 1850s) , notably innovative, winning gold medal @ great exhibition in 1851 gutta percha elongated galosh.
