gates interim dean of bush school of government , public service @ texas a&m university 1999 2001. on august 1, 2002, became 22nd president of texas a&m. university president, gates made progress in 4 key areas of university s vision 2020 plan, plan become 1 of top 10 public universities year 2020. 4 key areas include improving student diversity, increasing size of faculty, building new academic facilities, , enriching undergraduate , graduate education experience. during tenure, gates encouraged addition of 440 new faculty positions , $300 million campus construction program, , saw increases in minority enrollment. on february 2, 2007, gates conferred title of president emeritus unanimous vote of texas a&m university system board of regents. gates , wife becky received honorary doctoral degrees texas a&m on august 10, 2007.


gates left presidency of texas a&m university on december 16, 2006, , sworn in 2 days later secretary of defense. returned on april 21, 2009, speaker annual aggie muster ceremony. 1 of 6 speakers not graduate of texas a&m university since dwight d. eisenhower spoke in 1946. in affiliation a&m, gates has served on national security higher education advisory board.
