History Hokkekō
a group of hokkeko members of nichiren shoshu buddhism during gongyo services in nagano, japan.
before current lay association established nichiren shoshu members, hokkeko traces origins atsuhara persecutions lower class peasants in japanese feudal society. seventeen believers whipped , dragged death, while 3 of known farmers, jin-shirou, yagoro , yarou-kuro tied wooden post , shot death arrows upon pain of renouncing lotus sutra in replacement accepting pure land teachings. in later references, temple congregations hokkekō or hokkekōshū (法華講衆) date @ least 13th century. nichiren daishonin (1222-1282), founder of nichiren shōshū, referred collectively lay followers hokke—shū in dedication written on dai-gohonzon, school s object of veneration, inscribed on 12 october 1279. nichiren shoshu attributes appellation hokkekō usage nichiren daishonin. hokkekō name given nichiren daishonin s believers died @ atsuhara persecution , present living family descendants. affiliated head temple @ taiseki-ji in japan.
