26 may 1861 unit mustered american civil war; 4 companies served in army of northern virginia , fifth in army of tennessee. elements of washington artillery participated in on sixty major actions. few notable engagements include: battle of antietam, battle of gettysburg, battle of shiloh, battle of chickamauga, battle of fredericksburg, first battle of manassas, , battle of cold harbor.
after civil war, reorganized independent unit called louisiana volunteer field artillery served united states in occupation of cuba. later called service protect mexican border in 1916. year later received designation 141st artillery. in 1941, 141st field artillery mobilized world war ii earned presidential unit citation; duplicate unit formed, 935th field artillery battalion, both serving in europe , north africa. anti-tank batteries of battalion separated in mid-1941, , formed 773rd tank destroyer battalion.
between 1959 , 1967, several sister units combined form 141st field artillery battalion. in 2004 through 2005 , again in 2010, 141st fa part of 256th infantry brigade mobilized baghdad, iraq, in support of operations iraqi freedom , new dawn.
on 29 august 2005, hurricane katrina struck gulf coast of louisiana , mississippi while members of washington artillery still serving final weeks of deployment in iraq. following return of battalion louisiana, detachment mobilized new orleans aid law enforcement rescue efforts. of louisiana state police, efforts transitioned support mission new orleans police department. joint task force gator created combat rise of looting , other crimes resulting loss of law enforcement officers in new orleans area. after three-and-a-half years of assisting local police , patrolling city, task force released duty on 28 february 2009.
