the warship completed 6 days in port @ subic bay on 4 january 1971 , got underway hong kong. returned briefly subic bay, however, repairs 1 of radar antennae reached hong kong on 11 january. following four-day visit, stood out of british colony on way tonkin gulf. served 16 days in gulf, dividing time between piraz duties , assignments northern sar ship.

after final two-day stop @ subic bay, wainwright began long voyage charleston took through indian ocean, around cape of hope, , across southern atlantic complete first circumnavigation of globe. along way, made series of calls @ african , south american ports, beginning djibouti in french somaliland. there, headed massawa, ethiopia, participated in celebration of ethiopian navy day, during joined ships of other nations in observing graduation of midshipmen ethiopian naval academy , hosted then-emperor haile selassie on board. rounded out african itinerary calls @ diego suarez, madagascar, , @ lourenço marques, mozambique, before rounding cape , heading across atlantic toward brazil. visits rio de janeiro , recife in brazil , @ st. thomas in virgin islands preceded gunfire support training , missile shoot @ culebra island. on 2 april, wainwright steamed charleston , began extended standdown period.
