in mid-1966, beach boys business manager nick grillo formed brother records corporation, bringing in van dyke parks s manager , brian wilson s friend david anderle run organization office on sunset boulevard in los angeles, california. motivated in no small part negative reaction of capitol records of brian s ideas smile, new company gave band more control on recordings.


the shareholders 1966 members of beach boys: wilson brothers brian, carl, , dennis, along first cousin mike love, friend al jardine , bruce johnston, traded share in 1971. in 1983, shortly after death of dennis wilson, estate sold share corporation repay loans. in 1998, following carl wilson s death, share of corporation passed , still controlled estate.


the label s first releases beach boys heroes , villains single , smiley smile album in 1967, distributed capitol records. however, record label rendered dormant, releasing brian wilson/mike love single gettin hungry before band s albums , singles reverted appearing on capitol label alone. in 1969, however, concurrent signing reprise records, brother label reactivated, beginning single add music day , , sunflower album.


numerous other beach boys albums followed on joint brother/reprise label during 1970s, including holland, , 15 big ones. album flame, produced carl wilson, released in 1970 on brother label, distributed star-day king records. late 1970s, beach boys records issued on brother , distributed caribou records through cbs. of 2007, recent cd re-release series of beach boys 1970s albums on joint brother/capitol records label.
