ireland remained officially neutral during world war ii. however, on 26 august 1940, german luftwaffe bombed campile in broad daylight. 3 women killed – mary ellen kent (30), sister catherine kent (26), both terrerath, , kathleen hurley (27) garryduff. 4 german bombs dropped on creamery , restaurant sections of shelburne co-op on day. railway targeted bombers. attack has never been explained, although there numerous theories why bombing occurred.
on occasion of 50th anniversary of bombing, plaque erected on co-op walls in memory of 3 women.
