lochner associated 3 surviving books of hours; in darmstadt, berlin , anholt. extent of association in each debated; workshop members heavily involved in production. famous 1450s prayer book of stephan lochner @ darmstadt; others berlin book of prayers of c. 1444, , anholt prayerbook, completed in 1450s. manuscripts small (berlin: 9.3 cm x 7 cm, darmstadt: 10.7 cm x 8 cm, anholt: 9 cm x 8 cm) , similar in layout , colourisation , each extensively decorated in gold , blue. borders ornamented in bright colours , contain acanthus scrolls, gold foliage, flowers, berry-like fruits , round pods. darmstadt book includes complete cycle of martyrdom of apostles. illustrations contain lochner s characteristic application of deep blue, reminiscent of virgin in rose garden.


the art historian ingo walther detects lochner s hand in pious intimacy , soulfulness of figures, expressed gently , elegantly, in extremely small format of pictures . chapuis agrees attribution, noting how many of miniatures share thematic similarities attributed panels. writes illustrations not peripheral phenomenon. on contrary, address several of concerns articulated in lochner s paintings , formulate them anew. there little doubt these exquisite images stem same mind. text of darmstadt book written in cologne vernacular, berlin book in latin.
