after returning kolkata, saw ’nagarik’ has disbanded because of ego-clash, , studio in sinking mood. decided solo professional singer-songwriter , musician, , thought work in advertisement business, nothing materialized. during time wrote songs “tin shataker shahar”, “chena duhkha chena sukh” (finally published in 1992), “pratham sabkichu” (finally published in 1994) etc.

in february 1990, singer named raju bal took gentleman indranil gupta suman’s house. indranil listened “tin shataker shahar” , liked it, , told suman kolkata festival holding on in yuba bharati krirangan remembering call tri-centenary celebration of kolkata city, , song relates this, should sing song @ festival.

kabir suman in rented flat @ bhabanipur

solo live performance

kabir suman performed first solo live performance on 5 may 1991 @ shishir mancha. many magazines , newspapers invited, aajkal, desh, business standard, statesman, , reviewed it. ‘desh’ first labeled songs ‘sumaner gan’, popularized songs after time , still now.

but although reviews positive, not invitation other friend circle happed. performed in live programs of friends. unsure, , kabir suman not optimistic @ time eligibility. many people of advertisement business done jingles or theme songs including “lexpo 1991”, of them either gave him not single money, others gave him little money, despite kabir suman made works alone writing, composing, singing, playing instruments, , recording, mixing. advised him go mumbai professional works, refused it.

shubhendu maity told mr. somnath chattopadhyay, 1 of officials of gramophone company of india songs of kabir suman, , after shubhendu’s request, suman sent songs somnath after home recording. ravi kichlu, head of product development division of company welcomed suman, , shown interest record songs. kabir suman felt happy , surprised after listening this, , asked ravi reason of it, ravi kichlu told him - “i doing service indian music”. recording started after days in 1992.

tomake chai

kabir suman recorded 12 songs first album, named ‘tomake chai’, published in april 1992. in many aspects, milestone on history of bangla song. first bengali basic song album entirely written, composed, sung , musical instruments played artist himself. first bengali basic song album recorded of 4 track tape recorder.

on first pressing, not sold well, after 2nd pressing, gained huge success, , big hit. offbeat lyric, , instrumentation, drew great attention listeners, , got platinum disc.

after deliberation, suman zeroed in on name, kabir suman. according him, wanted keep name parents gave me, kept suman. took name kabir after sheikh kabir, bengali muslim poet wrote baishnab padabali.
