revere beach oldest public beach in united states. has active beach front district. inception, revere beach people s beach , used working class , many immigrants settled in area. revere beach reservation historic district listed on national register of historic places in 1998, including full revere beach reservation in 2003.


the beach began deteriorate in 1950s , 1970s had become strip of honky-tonk bars , abandoned buildings. great blizzard of 78 proved final death knell old revere beach, many of remaining businesses, amusements, pavilions, sidewalks, , of seawall destroyed.


the area once boasted extensive array of amusement rides , attractions. whip, ferris wheel, bluebeard s palace, fun house, hurley s dodgems, pit, himalaya, hippodrome, sandy s, wild mouse, virginia reel , many more provided hours of enjoyment residents , visitors alike. biggest attraction cyclone, among largest roller coasters in united states. built in 1925, cars traveled @ speeds of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) , height reached 100 feet (30 m). notable derby racer racing roller coaster, had series of accidents killed or critically injured riders between 1911 , 1936. lightning roller coaster @ revere beach, , member of harry traver s infamous terrifying triplets . in addition, there 2 roller skating rinks, 2 bowling alleys, , numerous food stands. there ballrooms, including famous, oceanview , beachview, each site of many dance marathons popular in 1930s.


the beach focus of major revitalization effort massachusetts department of conservation , recreation , city in 1980s , officially reopened in may 1992. boasts high-rise housing units, re-sanded beach, restored pavilions, , renovated boulevard. revere commemorated centennial of first opening of revere beach on weekend of july 19, 1996.

considered oldest continuously operating candy company in united states, necco best known namesake candy, necco wafers, seasonal sweethearts conversation hearts, , brands such clark bar , haviland thin mints. company maintains headquarters @ 135 american legion highway in revere, offers tours of facilities.


wonderland greyhound park

wonderland greyhound park greyhound racing track located in city owned westwood group. constructed on site of former wonderland amusement park. wonderland opened on june 12, 1935 , formerly offered 361 performances during 100-day, april september racing period. parimutuel wagering legalized massachusetts legislature in 1934. park opened following year , offered greyhound racing june 1935 until september 2009. ran last program on september 18, 2009, result of statewide referendum banned greyhound racing. future of land uncertain.


revere post office
