the 2nd nebraska participated in battle of whitestone hill, began on september 3, 1863, when general sully s troops engaged upwards of 2,000 warriors under chief 2 bears of yanktonai sioux. of 20 troopers killed in battle, 7 second nebraska. fourteen unit wounded in action.


the regiment mustered out december 23, 1863. number of veterans re-enlisted in 1st battalion nebraska veteran volunteer cavalry, served until 1865 when merged 1st nebraska cavalry regiment.
