when moody turned 17, moved boston work (after many job rejections) in uncle s shoe store. 1 of uncle s requirements moody attend congregational church of mount vernon dr. edward norris kirk served pastor. in april 1855 moody converted evangelical christianity when sunday school teacher, edward kimball, talked him how god loved him. conversion sparked start of career evangelist. however, first application church membership, in may 1855, rejected. not received church member until may 4, 1856. teacher, edward kimball, stated:
