the system created consolidation of 3 separate companies merged in 1940: interborough rapid transit company (irt), brooklyn–manhattan transit corporation (bmt), , independent subway system (ind). earliest transfer stations between lines of same system: either irt, bmt or ind. earliest free connection between lines remains in existence @ grand central–42nd street between irt flushing line , original irt subway (now served irt 42nd street shuttle), opened on june 22, 1915. stations constructed passageways connected different systems, such original irt subway s (now irt lexington avenue line) brooklyn bridge station bmt centre street loop subway s (now bmt nassau street line) chambers street station. on july 1, 1948, post-unification, many free transfers between former systems created coincident doubling of fare 5 ten cents.


the created station complex jay street–metrotech complex in brooklyn on ind culver line, ind fulton street line , bmt fourth avenue line; opened on december 8, 2010. court square complex in queens, opened in 1988 connection between ind queens boulevard , ind crosstown lines, expanded adding passageway irt flushing line on june 3, 2011. free transfer broadway–lafayette street (ind sixth avenue line) uptown platform of bleecker street (irt lexington avenue line) opened on september 25, 2012. transfer downtown platform has existed since may 19, 1957.
