despite move nascar, clauson returned dirt-track roots on january 12, racing in chili bowl, indoor midget race in tulsa, oklahoma, featuring of top names in racing, such jeff gordon, tony stewart, kasey kahne, jason leffler, gary scelzi, cruz pedregon, bobby santos iii, brett hearn , tim mccreadie. after starting feature mid-pack, finished fourth overall.


in 2008, clauson started season in no. 41 polaroid/texaco havoline dodge ganassi in nationwide series, replaced kyle krisiloff. drove no. 40 fastenal entry ganassi, filling in dario franchitti in select races. won 1st pole @ daytona in july, replaced full-time franchitti week after.


he set make cup debut @ bank of america 500 @ lowe s motor speedway driving no. 40 target/motorstorm: pacific rift dodge qualifying rained out , team, did not have enough owner points, did not qualify. second attempt @ cup series debut ended same way @ atlanta motor speedway. qualifying rained out race on october 26, 2008; have driven no. 40 guitar hero world tour dodge. in first actual attempt @ texas, clauson failed qualify.


clauson supposed drive no. 40 in nationwide series full-time in 2009, team shut down after fastenal left team. won turkey night grand prix in november.


clauson joined tony stewart racing silver crown team in usac 2010. during season successful in winning usac national midget championship own team, first-ever usac national drivers championship. clauson earned $300,000 scholarship compete in 6 indy lights oval races in 2011.


clauson ran 2012 indianapolis 500 sarah fisher hartman racing, finished 30th mechanical problems.


clauson won usac sprint car championship in 2012, , repeated in 2013.


following 2013 season, clauson replaced jerry coons jr. in joe dooling/rusty kunz number 63 westin packaged meats esslinger powered midget. on january 18, 2014, won chili bowl nationals @ tulsa expo center, while teammate michael pickens, driving number 63 dooling machine, esslinger powered midget, flipped 11 go. later year, gold crown nationals @ eldora speedway postponed after 5-hour rain delay, next day resumed racing , led 25 laps of race first gold crown midget win, holding off christopher bell in no. 71 kkm midget.

clauson returned indy 500 in 2015, driving kv racing technology/jonathan byrd s racing team, finishing 31st after accident while moving out of way faster car. competed in kokomo classic @ kokomo speedway later evening, finished 2nd kevin thomas, jr. in photo finish.


clauson attempting compete in 200 races in 2016 being billed chasing 200 tour, circular insanity . tour included 100th indianapolis 500, usac midget , sprint cars, world of outlaws (woo) sprint cars, , wingless sprint cars. ran 150 shows per year; hoped double racing 360 wingless sprint car class cars @ 410 (woo / usac) winged sprint car events. clauson traveled country living out of mobile home. indycar series announced during series banquet on october 4, 2016 clauson named indycar nation fan favorite driver voted on fans.
