it george malcolm had first proposed establishment of college of law within university of philippines system. however, board of regents of university of philippines had resisted proposal. malcolm arranged manila ymca offer law courses, commenced in 1910. malcolm acted secretary of these law courses. within year, board of regents relented , university of philippines adopted these classes formally establishing college of law on january 12, 1911. college formally opened in fifty (50) filipino , american students.
justice sherman moreland of philippine supreme court, first acting dean of college, declined take on position full-time. replaced malcolm, served until appointment associate justice of philippine supreme court in 1917.
in 1964, university of philippines law center established agency attached college of law, university of philippines law center created conduct continuing legal education programs, legal research , publications.
in 1960s 1980s, four-year law program consisted of one-hundred-twenty-two (122) units emphasize 8 bar subjects listed in revised rules of court: civil law, criminal law, remedial law, legal ethics , legal forms, commercial law, political law, tax law, labor law, public corporation , public officers, , international law. program included non-bar subjects such legal history, legal bibliography, statutory construction, jurisprudence, trial techniques, thesis , legal research, legal medicine, , practice court. in addition philippine laws , jurisprudence, foreign legal materials spain, united states , other asian countries integrated curriculum. students introduced basic principles of roman civil law, english common law, , other international legal systems.
in 1988, college launched core-elective curriculum, permitting law students enroll twenty (20) percent of total academic load elective subjects. effort made incorporate specializations in legal education. in 1989, college followed revised model law curriculum adopted philippine department of education. program composed of 51 subjects (124 academic units) took effect in 1990. offered additional non-bar subjects such legal profession, legal ethics, legal counselling, legal research, , legal writing.
the college has track record in international moot court competitions. instance, won jessup moot in 1995 , four-time winner of asia cup moot.
