land plants have alternation of generations, sporophyte generation produces spores rather gametes. strictly speaking, sporophytes of land plants not have either male or female reproductive organs. gametophytes of flowering plants of single sex; male gametophytes contained within pollen, , female gametophytes contained within ovules. sporophyte generation called dioecious when each sporophyte has 1 kind of spore-producing organ spores give rise either male gametes (sperm) or female gametes (eggs). different terms, dioicous , monoicous , may used gametophyte generation, although dioecious , monoecious used.
