there several archaeological sites near gorgan, including tureng tepe , shah tepe, in there remains dating neolithic , chalcolithic eras. other important neolithic sites in area yarim tepe, iran, , sange chaxmaq. also, nearby shahroud plain has many such sites. total number of confirmed neolithic sites on gorgan plain on 50.

according greek historian arrian, zadracarta largest city of hyrcania , site of royal palace . term means yellow city , , given great number of oranges, lemons, , other fruit trees grew in outskirts of city.
