the origin of parish church name saints peter , paul in engelskirchen lies in 13th century. massive west tower dates time. became independent parish following separation saint severinus parish in lindlar in 1554. number of parishioners outgrew capacity of church in 19th century. new three-aisle long house on round pillars transepts , separate main choir established. 1943 1945 homeless inhabitants of cologne , foreign civilian prisoners housed here. nonetheless, air raid on last day of war resulted in 2 bombs destroying part of church. bombs hit aisle , tower, , vault collapsed. 3 years later, minimal renovation done. in 1970s, there more thorough renovation. later new sacristy built.
