beginnings

the first zildjian cymbals created in 1618 avedis zildjian, alchemist looking way turn base metal gold; created alloy combining tin, copper, , silver sheet of metal make musical sounds without shattering. avedis given name of zildjian (zilciyân) sultan osman ii (from turkish word zil – cymbal, dji – maker-seller, ian – common suffix used in armenian last names means same in english) , began industry in 1623, details of main product remained secret generations. became family tradition company s heirs know manufacturing process.

around 1928, avedis iii, brother puzant , uncle, aram zildjian began manufacturing cymbals in quincy, massachusetts, , avedis zildjian co. formed on september 19, 1929, month before great depression began, in competition k. zildjian company in turkey. avedis made many innovations in cymbals still around today; first develop drum-set cymbals , gave cymbals names such ride, crash, splash, , hi-hat.

avedis iii s son armand zildjian, known father of artist relations, began hand-selecting cymbals top drummers. in 1968, k. zildjian co. , european trademarks bought on behalf of avedis zildjian co. in 1968, avedis split production 2 separate operations, opening azco factory in meductic, new brunswick, canada.

in 1970, zildjian needed production capabilities @ azco regular zildjian line, factory in quincy (the location of zildjian) send castings finished cymbals @ azco.

recent history

in keeping tradition, armand passed zildjian secret alloy daughters, craigie , debbie (14th generation), both of whom continue run family business current factory in norwell, massachusetts.
