improvisation

improvisation in raga soul of indian classical music – essential aspect. manodharma sangeetam or kalpana sangeetam ( music of imagination ) known in carnatic music, embraces several varieties of improvisation.


the main traditional forms of improvisation in carnatic music consist of following:

ragam
swarakalpana

raga alapana

an alapana, called ragam, exposition of raga or tone – slow improvisation no rhythm, raga acts basis of embellishment. in performing alapana, performers consider each raga object has beginnings , endings , consists somehow of sequences of thought.


the performer explore ragam , touch on various nuances, singing in lower octaves first, gradually moving higher octaves, while giving hint of song performed.


theoretically, ought easiest type of improvisation, since rules few, in fact, takes skill sing pleasing, comprehensive (in sense of giving feel ragam ) and, importantly, original raga alapana.


niraval

niraval, performed more advanced performers, consists of singing 1 or 2 lines of text of song repeatedly, series of melodic improvised elaborations. although niraval consists of extempore melodic variations, generally, original patterns of duration maintained; each word in lines of text stay set within original place (idam) in tala cycle. lines played @ different levels of speed can include double speed, triple speed, quadruple speed , sextuple speed. improvised elaborations made view of outlining raga, tempo, , theme of composition.


kalpanaswaram

kalpanaswaras have predictable rhythmical structure; swaras sung end on samam (the first beat of rhythmical cycle). swaras can sung @ same speed or double speed of melody being sung, though artists sing triple-speed phrases too.


kalpanaswaram elementary type of improvisation, taught before other form of improvisation.


tanam

tanam 1 of important forms of improvisation, , integral ragam tanam pallavi. developed veena, consists of expanding raga syllables tha, nam, thom, aa, nom, na, etc.


ragam tanam pallavi

ragam, tanam, , pallavi principal long form in concerts, , composite form of improvisation. name suggests, consists of raga alapana, tanam, , pallavi line. set slow-paced tala, pallavi line composed performer. through niraval, performer manipulates pallavi line in complex melodic , rhythmic ways. niraval followed kalpanaswarams.


tani avartanam

tani avartanam refers extended solo played percussionists in concert, , played after main composition in concert. percussionist displays full range of skills , rhythmic imagination during solo, may take 2 twenty minutes.
