the george w. elder steamship operated oregon railroad , navigation company. east coast steamer built john roach & sons in chester, pennsylvania, george w. elder purchased oregon steamship company , sailed around cape horn oregon in 1876. oregon steamship company later sold george w. elder oregon railroad , navigation company. on may 31, 1899, george w. elder left seattle, washington, carrying 126 passengers , crew on 9,000-mile (14,000 km) scientific expedition russia, visiting alaska , british columbia along way. later year, george w. elder used troopship in philippines u.s. army. george w. elder continued operate oregon railroad , navigation company until 1904, when transferred san francisco , portland steamship company. in 1905, george w. elder struck rock in columbia river , sank 16 feet (5 m) of water. ship subsequently raised , acquired north pacific steamship company. in 1907, george w. elder helped rescue survivors of columbia. ultimate fate of george w. elder following retirement in 1935 remains uncertain.
