mayor

mokpo began local government in 1994. in july 1995 inaugurated first mayor, gwon dam, had been president of munhwa broadcasting corporation. city s lack of supply in past caused gwon focus on improving city s water supplies. in 2000, mayor officially provided aid north korea in form of rice shipments. however, gwon came conflict leaders of democratic party on fair election practices, causing him leave party. filed lawsuit against democratic party, courts subsequently rejected.


jeon tae hong, next mayor, made important contributions mokpo s government, died in 2005. following death, jeong jong deuk elected mayor, promising protection of tourism industry. once in office, deuk responded concerns depressed condition of old downtown area establishing office of original city replanning , adopted slogan city of light.
