the attraction reuses 8 original 1959 submarine voyage thru liquid space attraction vehicle hulls built @ todd shipyards in san pedro, california. vertical rollers attached @ each end of keel roll within submerged guide channel. original diesel engines replaced electric battery-powered propulsion units charged @ loading dock contact-less inductive coils, increasing efficiency , eliminating fuel spills. guests board through hatch @ either end crossing hinged loading ramps , descending spiral stairs. twenty aft-boarding guests seated facing starboard side , fore-boarding guests seated facing port. each submarine seated 38 guests, removal of diesel engines increased seating 40 spring-loaded fiberglass seats. lap sitting of small children permitted. 46 on-board flotation devices limit maximum capacity 45 guests , 1 helmsman. when boarding ramps raised hatches sealed watertight (but not airtight) , mooring lines released. although viewports below water level, submarines not submerge when diving . descent , submersion simulated bubbles rise across viewports when vehicles pass through compressed air released under hull , waterfalls. each viewport blows fresh dehumidified air across glass prevent fogging. each cabin interior has 40 viewports framed dark blue mesh, , wavy blue stripe painted across ceiling. original subs s exteriors painted navy gray; new livery colors bright yellow above water, light blue boot stripe @ waterline, , reflection-reducing matte blue-black below waterline.
the sail of each submarine (from helmsman operates) has control console , board of indicator lights displaying submarine s operation status if abnormal happen on ride s cycle. cast members on ride trained on how respond each abnormality, , in contact other operating positions of ride. although submarine on guideway, helmsman controls forward , backward movement via small joystick regulate these speeds (shown in rpms, in lieu of actual propeller moves boat) vary in different sections of ride. cast members operating submarines must guide submarine through series of laser sensors, each activate different scene show. guiding timers , block-lights placed throughout ride cast member time each scene. helmsmen cast members able unlock watertight hatches via levers in sail, done each time boat arrives dock. each sail carries flashlight, opening/closing checklists ride s opening/closing crew, , radio communicate other boats , stations in attraction.
the queue, docks, subs , scenes re-themed represent movie s australian harbor, , captain , first mate speak australian accents.
marine observation outpost (m.o.o.) – guests see show on high definition lcd screen similar underwater attraction. alternative experience provided accommodate guests conditions preventing them boarding subs. virtual version filmed aboard submarines before attraction opened public, , includes few minor features subsequently removed actual attraction.
