the 2004 democratic national convention first held in boston, 1 of few held in home state of presidential nominee, , first since terrorist attacks of september 11, 2001. during convention, there memorial service honor victims of attacks. halima salee, lost daughter, son-in-law, , unborn grandchild on american flight 11, spoke.

after initial notice 34 cities, 10 cities requested rfp host convention: atlanta, baltimore, boston, chicago, dallas, detroit, houston, miami, new york , pittsburgh. of those, 5 cities (baltimore, boston, detroit, miami , new york) submitted bids, , 4 cities (not including baltimore) visited dnc during site selection process. boston announced host of convention on november 13, 2002.

during convention, u.s. capitol police, u.s. coast guard, , other governmental organizations took many security measures protect participants of democratic national convention. security measures included bomb-sniffing dogs, 7-feet high metal barricades, ban on corporate , private flights @ logan airport, along shutting down of interstate 93.

other bostonians took advantage of meeting national stage specific agendas. police union, example, gained attention threats of picketing of delegates entering , exiting functions – dilemma democrats party has traditionally been ally of organized labor. having worked without contract 2 years, police union struck deal boston mayor thomas menino new contract, avoiding major embarrassment party.
