route description

highway 17 crosses of remote regions of ontario. although there several settlements established throughout length, distance between gas stations can exceed several hundred kilometres. despite isolation of highway, well-travelled throughout length. section of highway 17 north of lake superior regarded 1 of scenic drives in province.


manitoba nipigon

highway 17 begins @ boundary between ontario , manitoba, large installation greets drivers in both directions. highway 2 lanes wide , travels on , between surface features of canadian shield; further west manitoba highway widens 4 lane divided expressway. east, highway travels through thick boreal forest towards keewatin, kenora bypass, highway 17a, splits north. through town of kenora, highway 17 signed, maintained under connecting link agreement between town , province. full provincial maintenance resumes @ eastern town limits. further east, highway merges kenora bypass. meets northern terminus of highway 71, makes gradual eastward journey through lake-dotted kenora district town of dryden. here highway encounters 1 of few agriculturally-sustainable areas of northern ontario. highway begins zig-zag southeasterly, passing through several minor settlements before entering mining town of ignace. shortly thereafter, begins curve south. meets highway 11 475 km (295 mi) east of manitoba boundary.

the 2 highways travel concurrently towards thunder bay @ western lakehead of lake superior. though travelled through twin-cities, highway bypasses northwest on at-grade thunder bay expressway.

within nipigon, highway 11 , highway 17 cross nipigon river on nipigon river bridge. along railway crossing south, , on northern shore of lake nipigon, forms narrowest bottleneck in canada between atlantic , pacific oceans. on eastern shore of river, highway 11 separates , travels north towards geraldton , hearst. highway 17 continues east along northern shore of lake superior. near white river, highway enters algoma district , turns southward. meets western terminus of highway 101 near wawa, provides shorter route sudbury via sultan industrial road.

south of wawa, highway enters lake superior provincial park. after proceeding through several mountain ranges, , crossing numerous rivers , montreal river hill, highway enters sault ste. marie. here border crossing united states provided via sault ste. marie international bridge, connects i-75 in michigan. highway exits sault ste. marie east, newly constructed segment of 4 lane divided highway branches north; highway 17b (the remaining business route of highway 17 in service) continues east through garden river. divided highway bypasses garden river , passes east of echo bay before curving south , merging highway 17b.


shortly thereafter, turns east , travels along north channel of lake huron towards sudbury, passing through numerous small towns, including thessalon, blind river, massey , mckerrow. @ sudbury, highway widens freeway through walden area of city until reaching southwest / southeast bypass @ lively, narrows again super 2 road. segment undergoing environmental assessment, plans upgrade full freeway in next ten years.

highway 17 meets ottawa river in deux rivieres


highway 17 passes south of urban centre of sudbury. meets highway 69 @ interchange. @ interchange, southwest , southeast bypasses meet, , on kilometre, highway 17 divided four-laned freeway.


the super 2 continues northeast meet original alignment of highway 17 east of downtown sudbury. here turns east , travels through city s outlying neighbourhoods of coniston , wahnapitae; new freeway alignment of route in planning stages.


the highway route passes through rural municipalities of markstay-warren , west nipissing before reaching north bay, follows undivided four-lane expressway alignment, reduced not full control of access, through city of north bay; of 2012, preparations have taken place freeway conversion , realignment of segment. 4.1 kilometres algonquin avenue twin lakes area, route once again concurrent highway 11. @ northern end of concurrency, highway 11 travels north , wraps westward , south nipigon; @ southern end, continues southward towards toronto, while highway 17 turns east toward ottawa valley. at-grade intersection highway 63 located @ approximately midpoint of concurrency.

east of north bay, highway 17 meets highway 94, thereafter travelling alongside mattawa river confluence ottawa river in mattawa, drivers must turn @ junction highway 533. highway parallels ottawa river through mountainous region, first passing through villages of stonecliffe , rolphton before arriving in deep river, planned community developed part of manhattan project. passes through chalk river , enters canadian forces base petawawa.


beginning @ southern end of army base, highway 17 follows pembroke bypass, bypassing west of petawawa , pembroke, intersects highway 41. bypass ends @ renfrew county road 40, north of muskrat lake. highway travels south through town of cobden. follows bypass east of renfrew , meets highway 60. highway 17 curves east , passes north of alexander stewart provincial park. approximately 500 m (1,600 ft) east of campbell drive, northwest of arnprior, highway divides , widens 4 lanes, @ point highway 417 begins. disconnected section of highway (known old highway 17) still exists within ottawa region between regional road 29 , grants side rd, travelling directly parallel highway 417. however, downgraded , possibly absorbed part of regional road 117.

highway 17 used have number of business routes, 1 of have been decommissioned. @ 1 time primary route of highway 17 through respective locations, , given business route designation following construction or designation of newer bypass alignment.
