chamberlain left u.s. army after war ended, going home state of maine. due immense popularity, served governor of maine 4 one-year terms after won election republican. victory in 1866 set record votes , highest percentage maine governor time. break own record in 1868. during time in office, attacked angered support capital punishment , refusal create special police force enforce prohibition of alcohol.






after leaving political office, returned bowdoin college. in 1871, appointed president of bowdoin , remained in position until 1883, when forced resign because of ill health war wounds. served ex-officio trustee of nearby bates college 1867 1871.


in january 1880, there dispute newly elected governor of maine, , maine state house occupied band of armed men. outgoing governor, alonzo garcelon, summoned chamberlain, commander of maine militia, take charge. chamberlain sent home armed men, , arranged augusta police keep control. stayed in state house of twelve-day period until maine supreme judicial court s decision on election results known. during time, there threats of assassination , kidnapping, , on 1 occasion, went outside face down crowd of 25–30 men intending kill him, , both sides offered bribes appoint him united states senator. having gratified neither side in dispute, did not become senator, , career in state politics ended.
