robert s ghost illusion
robert developed phantasmagoria show based around projection system , use of other effects , techniques. robert scripted scenes involved actors , ventriloquism alongside projections, creating convincing impression of appearance of ghosts. robert used several projection devices in variety of ways, including rear projection , projection onto large pieces of wax-coated gauze (giving image more translucent appearance). used smoke , mirrors further disguise mechanisms behind show. painting skills allowed him create accurate depictions of famous french heroes such jean-paul marat, voltaire, , jean-jacques rousseau.
robert appeared @ pavillon de l echiquier on 23 january 1798 , performed first show. charisma , never-before-seen visual effects left audience convinced had seen real ghosts, many left terrified performance.
after being investigated authorities, robert s show shut down in paris. moved bordeaux , continued perform, before returning paris few weeks later. during trip bordeaux robert first experience balloon flight passenger – experience have massive influence on life. on return paris robert discovered 2 of former assistants had continued performances without him. refined show, making more elaborate , inventive , started performing in more permanent location 3 january 1799. gothic surroundings of crumbling convent des capucines near place vendôme gave robert ideal eerie home show.
the shows began audience being shown optical illusions , trompe-l œil effects on way showroom. inside candlelit room audience seated audio effects emulate sound of wind , thunder , unseen glass harmonica plays unsettling music. robert enter room , start monologue death , afterlife. began show in earnest, creating smoky mix of sulphuric acid , aqua fortis before projecting ghostly apparitions.
the shows performed @ convent des capucines 4 years, , robert went on take show around world, visiting russia, spain, , united states among others. during travels dedicated lot of time ballooning.
