richard lydekker born @ tavistock square in london. father gerard wolfe lydekker, barrister-at-law dutch ancestry. family moved harpenden lodge after richard s birth. , educated @ trinity college, cambridge, took first-class in natural science tripos (1872). in 1874 joined geological survey of india , made studies of vertebrate palaeontology of northern india (especially kashmir). remained in post until death of father in 1881. main work in india on siwalik palaeofauna; published in palaeontologia indica. responsible cataloguing of fossil mammals, reptiles , birds in natural history museum (10 vols., 1891).


he named variety of taxa including golden-bellied mangabey; taxon authority named lydekker .
