klqb launched kqbt on 104.3 fm (licensed taylor, texas) in june 1998 after frequency moved southward austin area after serving temple-killeen market kkik. enough, kqbt, branding [the] beat 104.3, began targeting austin in 1998 rhythmic contemporary hits station, playing hip hop, r&b, pop, , dance. @ time, station complemented co-owned urban ac station kjce k-juice 1370 (now talk radio station). propel kqbt 1 of austin s top 5 radio stations (sometimes #1) according arbitron ratings. 2001, station dropped dance music , pop music playlist , has gone straight hip hop , r&b. kqbt in initial competition top 40 rival khfi (of first challenged) , rhythmic oldies-turned-ac rival kfmk-fm (launched year after kqbt); gained direct competition kdht (now kgsr) in 2003.

in 2006, cbs radio sold austin radio cluster (also including kamx, kkmj , kjce) entercom. on february 21, 2007, entercom announced 104.3 frequency , kxbt calls sold univision , change spanish format on february 26. staff told of stunning news before made public in trades , expecting leave prior flip. albeit univision owned hip hop music stations in san antonio, houston, rio grande valley , albuquerque @ time, austin cluster of univision did not retain format. after announcement made, border media flipped kxxs rhythmic top 40 format, hired former kxbt staff, , relaunched beat 104.9 , leaving station virtually intact. (the previous digital 104.9 format relaunched on 92.5.)

as beat , kxbt (on 104.9) has since signed off format in 2008 different format, resurrected clear channel (which trademarked brand urban , rhythmic stations decade earlier) on kfmk , moved kpez.
