a flower festival held @ yudal mountain every april , may. festival of largehead hairtail (in hangul:목포사랑은빛갈치축제) takes place around yeongsan lake every october. festival extremely popular among fishing fans , family tourists. fishing contest held, wherein great numbers of people take part, followed fireworks display.

the nanyeong singing memorial celebrates famous singer, lee nan-young, song, tear of mokpo gained wide popularity. memorial started in 1968 honam maeil newspaper stopped, restarted mbc mokpo , held every autumn.

city of light

the city has plan promoting tourism in old downtown, , south jeolla province agreed offer support city s plan. city s population decline has resulted in closure of many shops, drastic reduction in city s school system. example, student enrollment @ sanjeong elementary school has dropped below 300 high of more 3,000. project, entitled, city of light , called establishing light show along street runs next railway station. however, environmentalists have lodged objections, arguing plan have irrevocable impact, harming ecological balance of mountain.

the mokpo natural history museum has large collection of fossils on world. began single building, has expanded second building, cultural heritage hall, specializes in local relics dating far prehistoric time. museum has extensive collection of samples , data regarding dinosaur fossils insects , cetaceans found in yellow sea. 1 of significant displays nest of dinosaur eggs, found on aphae island, restored , opened public in 2010. eggs reach lengths greater 40 cm, , have been dated approximately 80 million years ago, during mesozoic period. korea forest service chose museum record samples of insects in national database biological resources in 2009.

namnong memorial hall commemorates famed calligrapher, heo gun. hall situated within korean traditional garden , features exhibitions on different series of works.

the mokpo ceramic museum opened in 2008, funded government establish ceramics , china exhibits notable manufacturers. meanwhile, literature hall of mokpo (in hangul:목포문학관) not far ceramic museum, , hosts literature classes general public, featuring specific writers or novels, in order promote literature among local population.

mokpo famous hongeo (in hangul : 홍어), strong smelling fermented cuisine featuring skate, kind of ray fish. other delicacies of mokpo are: kimchi , pyeonyuk (in hangul: 홍어삼합); yeonpotang, or octopus slender legs; hoe; , seasoned portunus trituberculatus. of seafood dishes. city started public market vendors selling own delicacies, located downtown.

yudal stadium located next 100 year memorial avenue. stadium consists of ballpark , 8 lane track. behind stadium, local groups able use public tennis courts. ground floor of stadium houses committees of diverse sports.

the city has attracted many athletes train in area during winter, due sunny , warm weather, , numerous accommodations. city has been successful in reaching agreements 127 teams, totaling 6,000 athletes, trained during winter in 2004. since 2005, focus has been on track , field sports in order boost number of visiting athletes.

recreational parks located sparsely around yudal mountain, while city in process of constructing additional park in samhakdo area.

the mokpo cultural complex located along shore near gatbawi, consisting of 2 buildings, 1 performance , other exhibition. however, complex limited seating capacity: maximum of 700 people two-story building.

the mokpo civil culture & sports center built in 2003 meet needs of increasing population in downtown area. however, operating fees have proven burden province. consists of 3 halls, capacity of more 1,200 people.

there 2 libraries in mokpo. civil library of mokpo opened in 1974 @ old consulate of japan. in 1989, moved closer yudal stadium, , consists of 4 stories, 1,636 seats. library home on 360,000 books, having internet-access research rooms. public library of mokpo located near north harbor. began part of mokpo educational institute, has since gained independence.
