rockland settled european settlers, northeastern region of neighboring abington in 1673. town separated , incorporated rockland on march 9, 1874. named town s rocky nature, better suited mills , industry farming. during king philip s war, town site of encampment during raids on town of scituate.


during twentieth century, town site of portion of landing strips of south weymouth naval air station. airstrip closed in 1996 part of fourth round of closures under base realignment , closure act.


in recent years, growing number of artists have moved community, attracted former factory buildings place work , meet.
